Wanderlust Australia 11 day Outback Queensland and Longreach coach tour

Wanderlust Australia Coach Tours, Queensland outback coach tour, Longreach coach tour

The Queensland outback is like one giant Aussie history and geography lesson that you’ll experience first hand with us. But before heading west, feel like a big kid at the Gold Coast’s theme parks. We’ll then take you to the complete opposite, to Longreach and other classic outback towns.

Walk in the footsteps of dinosaurs. Then deep-dive into outback history with our unique hands-on experiences, hearing local stories of bush poets, stockman legends and larrikins. You’ll even see where The Labour Party and QANTAS were born.

Enjoy dining on locally grown produce watching the sunset. Who can resist a campfire-oven roast and a classic outback pub with cold beer? And you’ll meet plenty of local characters too.

Pack your bags because Wanderlust Australia is inviting you along for the ride. It’s going to be a fun trip!

What you’ll experience like a local on your Wanderlust Australia 11 day tour

Our holiday begins on the fabulous Queensland Gold Coast.

On arrival into the airport, we head to our accommodation to check in and enjoy the facilities.

Dinner tonight will be an exercise in choosing which cuisine takes our fancy, with plenty of options at our fingertips.

We are so close to the beach that it will almost beckon us to take a stroll and even a swim, where once again there is a multitude of eating venues.

No meals included

What a tour we have ahead of us! At Sea World, there is so much to see and do. Our program for the day will be provided on arrival so be sure to take note of the things you want to see – Shark Bay, Polar Bear Shores, Shark Attack, the Dolphin Nursery Pool and much more. Access to all parts of the Park is easy via the Sea World Monorail.

Early afternoon we depart for Movie World. From the minute we walk through the Grand Archway, we’ll become lost in a world of fantasy and fun. We will meet our favourite stars and super-heroes, experience an array of stunning shows and even have the chance to take a ride or two, if we wish. What an amazing day of adventure!

This evening will be special too. There is no place on earth like the Australian Outback… and no show on earth like the Australian Outback Spectacular – Heartland. Get involved with true Australian characters, Reg and Marge, battling a severe five-year drought on their farm. This touching story will resonate with many, as it delves into real world struggles that many Aussie farmers are dealing with today. With the help from some unlikely characters and friendships that will last a lifetime, the pair overcome the harsh realities of life in the Australian Outback.

Prepare to embark on a vivid, spectacular and emotional ride into the heart of the Australian bush under the iconic red roof with a delicious three course dinner. Australia’s favourite dinner and show is more than a night out – it’s an experience steeped in courage, tradition and daring Australian spirit.

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Making our way to Yandina and the Ginger Factory on the Sunshine Coast begins an eventful day. We enjoy a tour tracing the life of ginger from planting to final use, see ginger growing in the patch and then view the factory from the observation deck to see production.

After a light lunch we can visit the Gingertown shops or stroll through the landscaped gardens featuring flowering ornamental Ginger and Heliconias.

We continue on through the National Trust town of Childers. The township is set on top of rolling hills of red soil framed by green fields of sugar cane. In 1902 a disastrous fire destroyed much of Childers but the subsequent rebuilding has given us the amazing variety of architectural styles still largely intact today.

Arriving into Bundaberg we make our way to our rooms and freshen up before we head out to experience riverside dining. Perched on the banks of the beautiful Burnett River, the popular H2O Restaurant gives us a birdseye view of the sunset as it sinks over the glistening waters of the river.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Our travels continue along the Bruce Highway through Rockhampton today. It’s where the beef is big and the hats are even bigger.

Located on the banks of the Fitzroy River, Rockhampton is known as Australia’s “beef capital” and sits astride the Tropic of Capricorn – the crossing into the tropics so to say. After a relatively small goldrush, cattle soon became the big industry.

Rockhampton is the regional capital of central Queensland and has a number of well-preserved riverside buildings within its business district.

On arrival we have time to stretch our legs and buy lunch before we join the Capricorn Highway travelling through Blackwater and on to Emerald where we stay for the night.

Emerald Explorer’s Inn | (07 4982 2822)

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

This morning we farewell Emerald and travel to Longreach. Before we leave we have time to take a look at the National Trust listed Railway Station with its wrought iron lacework and pillared portico, it truly is a beautiful building.

On the road again we stop at an ideal spot for a picnic lunch before travelling to Barcaldine. This town is steeped in the history and we see the “Tree of Knowledge” taking pride of place next to the Barcaldine Railway Station, marking the spot where the Australian Labour Party was formed.

We also visit the Worker’s Heritage Centre, the only national attraction dedicated to celebrating the lives and proud heritage of ordinary working people. The displays tell the stories of the railway workers and blacksmiths, the farmers, nurses and teachers who shaped the nation.

This afternoon we stop in Ilfracombe where we have time to “wet the whistle” at the famous Wellshot Hotel.

The last leg of today’s journey is to Longreach, a town which has played a significant role in the early development of Central Queensland and Outback Australia. After our day on the road we settle in and unpack for our four night stay.

4 nights | Albert Park Motor Inn, Longreach | (07 4658 2411)

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

On today’s adventures we uncover some national treasures, such as the historic 1922 QANTAS hanger, at the QANTAS Founders Museum. The historic photographs, memorabilia and multimedia displays bring alive the inspirational stories of one of the world’s pioneering airlines.

We then cross over to the Australian Stockmans Hall of Fame where we have made a booking for the Outback Stockmans Show. The Outback Stockman’s Show encompasses the modern day aspects of being a stockman, as well as telling the tales of what it used to be like in the past.

We have lunch here then spend the afternoon immersed in the stories of how the outback came to life, displayed in the exhibitions within the Hall of Fame.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We head off to experience the freedom of the vast open plains and visit the township of Winton today. Dramatic and ever-changing scenery will pass our window before arriving at the “jump up,” a rugged mesa towering above the surrounding plains.

We’ll discover here at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs that the area was once home to these prehistoric animals. Be guided through the largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils and uncover the largest fossil preparation laboratory in the southern hemisphere.

In town we visit the newly re-built Waltzing Matilda Centre, a world-class museum and art gallery. Lunch is followed by a self-guided tour through displays focusing on the livestock and wool industries of the outback, the women of the homesteads, the Australian landscape and of course, the classic poem.

Before leaving town, we’ll drive by the famous art deco building of the North Gregory Hotel. This historical building has an impressive past, from the first public performance of Waltzing Matilda to the clandestine meetings that saw the launch of a little airline named QANTAS. It is fitting that we are here as Qantas celebrates her centenary this year.

We return to Longreach to complete a great sightseeing day in Winton. Tonight, we dine at The Welcome Home restaurant, Stonegrill style. Taking traditional campfire cooking from outside to in, this is a hands-on experience in a warm and inviting environment.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Today we are going to have a special experience as we get an insight to the area through the eyes of local graziers and pioneer families. We will meet the owners of a local station called Strathmore to learn about their operations and the challenges of operating on the land.

We then head back into town and really step back in time – at Kinnon & Co in the main street. Their Station Store has an amazing range of traditionally made leatherwear and a treasure trove of historic nostalgia.

We can experience the Harry Redford Old Time Tent Show “The Legends Tribute”. Laugh at the antics of Australia’s most famous cattle duffer, Harry Redford or “Captain Starlight” – a mix of poetic story and Australian humour to create live theatre, outback style! It will be a lot of fun.

There will be a little bit of free time this afternoon for shopping or private sightseeing.

Tonight we enjoy a sunset cruise followed by dinner on the banks of the Thomson River – a timeless waterhole. There will be an open fire and bush poetry. This is the best opportunity to “Live the Outback Story”.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We bid farewell to Longreach this morning as we turn south to begin the journey home.

We travel through Isisford, a charming little settlement which has not changed significantly since the turn of the century but one of its claims to fame is the fact Banjo Paterson wrote Clancy of The Overflow here.

We arrive in Blackall, home of the extraordinary record held by legendary shearer Jackie Howe. He set the almost unbelievable record of shearing 321 sheep with blade shears in a day. A bronze statue now stands as a monument to the man and the achievement.

Our lunch venue is just out of town where we can satisfy our curiousity over the massive Wool Scour. This steam-driven wool washing facility is the last one remaining of the 52 once operating across the country.

We continue through to Charleville for the night.

Mulga Country Motor Inn Charleville | (07 4654 3255)

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

The travel day we have ahead of us today sees us pass through some interesting country. Take Amby for example – famous for the Scar Trees that are here, the War Memorial and Arch Way and Amby’s International Airport!

At nearby Muckadilla we make a brief stop at the Muckadilla Whistle Stop and Native Bush Gardens.

This is a small community, with a big heart. The Whistle Stop houses local memorabilia, including a tribute to Australia’s shortest serving Prime Minister and local lad, Frank Forde.

We also pass through Roma and Chinchilla before arriving into Brisbane late afternoon.

Hotel Grand Chancellor Brisbane | (07 3831 4055)
