What lies outback of the ‘Australian outback’? Well it’s the ‘Australian wilderness’, and we’ll show you its local side seldom seen by travellers.

What you’ll experience like a local on your Wanderlust Australia 11 day tour

After our flight, we find ourselves arriving in Darwin during the best time of the year – warm days and low humidity.

Using our taxi voucher, we head to our accommodation and have the rest of the day to settle in.

Darwin is known for its diverse multicultural cuisine so tonight we are free to explore the many restaurants and bars just outside the hotel. A local favourite is Hanuman – where we are taken on a culinary journey through South East Asia.

2 nights l DoubleTree by Hilton Esplanade Darwin | (08 8980 0800)

No meals included

This morning we meet our friendly crew and our fellow adventurers before a day of exploring Darwin.

We uncover the eclectic past with a local guide discovering the part Darwin played during World War II. We’ll find that the city still contains many of its remaining historic buildings such as the Old Court House and Government House that sit alongside the newly constructed Parliament House.

Afterwards we’ll have time to soak up the balmy weather with free time. Visit one of the many Aboriginal art galleries, museums or enjoy some retail therapy.

This evening we experience the famous Darwin sunset on onboard the Spirit of Darwin.

With a view only gained from the waters of the harbour, we sit back and relax with a wonderful dinner while the Top End sky puts on a brilliant display of burning yellows, deep oranges and wild pinks. Just magical!

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We head to the beautiful Litchfield National Park and swim in rock-pools amongst canyons seen in all the tourism campaigns.

This is the Northern Territory we have dreamt about. With untouched rainforests, stunning waterfalls, swimming holes and magnificent scenery, Litchfield has gained the reputation as the jewel of the Northern Territory’s crown.

There are some great photo opportunities as we stop to see the magnetic anthills and see the cascading Florence Falls. For anyone looking for a swim – take a dip in the Wangi Falls plunge pool.

This afternoon we travel to Katherine for a jaw dropping Nitmiluk Gorge Cruise. Be transported to the spiritual world of the Jawoyn culture and history as we witness the magnificent gorge backdrop and ever changing colour as the sun sets.

Finishing our evening with a candlelit dinner under the sparkling stars is the perfect end to the day.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

From Katherine we travel to Victoria River Crossing and Timber Creek at the northern edge of the Gregory National Park.

We then cross the border into Western Australia. A highlight will be our cruise from Lake Argyle, a Kimberley treasure, to Kununurra. Marvel at the spectacular scenery and abundance of Australian native wildlife in their natural habitat.

Take in the untamed landscape of the lesser known but equally incredible Carr Boyd Ranges. We arrive in Kununurra, established as the residential and administrative centre of the Ord River Scheme – a huge irrigation system that was developed in the 1970s.

3 nights l The Kimberley Grande Resort, Kununurra | (1300 955 549)

Meals: Breakfast and lunch

This morning we have time for a remarkable optional* flight over Purnululu National Park to see the Bungle Bungle Range (own expense). See a maze of curious orange and black striped beehive shaped domes from above making it the Kimberley’s best scenic views.

For those not wanting to fly, this is the perfect opportunity for a sleep in!

With the group back together, we take a tour of the town which will include Diversion Dam, Kellys Knob and Ivanhoe Crossing. Their significance will be unfolded as the day pans out.

Later this afternoon we visit Mirima National Park, also known as Hidden Valley. Hailed by the locals as the mini Bungle Bungle range, the fascinating rock formations have taken shape over millions of years.

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

* Please advise at time of booking if you would like to include this optional scenic flight.

Touring the Kimberley is one highlight after another, but today will be a day none of us will forget – and none of us would have experienced before!

We have a leisurely start before we begin making our way to the Zebra Rock Mine on the Northern Territory border. Zebra rock is a geological enigma found nowhere else in the world. The rock found in the mine is literally pattered like a Zebra – geologists around the world are unable to agree on exactly how this special rock came to be.

We’ll enjoy some touring along the way including some unique off-road sights with our local coach captain.

Lunch will be freshly caught Silver Cobbler and they say the lunch hits a 10 on the “fish‘n chip-odometer”!

We’ll take a tour of the mine, enjoy our afternoon tea and explore the gallery full of handmade jewellery, with polished and sealed feature stone to take home.

We finish with sparkling wine and nibbles as we watch the sun set over spectacular Lake Argyle.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We say goodbye to Kununurra and travel to the Argyle Diamond Mine where we meet our destination specialist for a tour.

Its Australia’s only major diamond producer, manufacturing the extremely rare and valuable pink diamonds as well as fine whites, intriguing champagne and cognac diamonds too.

After our tour and lunch in the Mess, we continue to Halls Creek, on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert.

Breakfast and dinner at motel | lunch at Argyle Diamond Mine

You’ll be amazed by this country and how the geology and topography changes as we continue travelling west through the magnificent red mountain scenery of the Kimberley to Fitzroy Crossing, one of Australia’s unique outback towns for lunch.

At Danggu Geikie Gorge, take in the panoramic views and learn about the stunning geological features, wildlife and cultural significance of the gorge on a relaxing cruise. It’s been carved over millions of years by the mighty Fitzroy River, through part of an ancient limestone barrier reef which snakes across the west Kimberley.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Our destination today is Broome but first we detour to visit the Boab Prison Tree, one of the most unconventional lockups you’ll ever come across, capable of holding a number of prisoners. In the early days it was used as an overnight prison before their final trek into Derby.

Here we can also have our photo taken in front of the water trough that locals claim to be the biggest in the southern hemisphere – a perfect addition to your “big things” bucket list! We continue our last leg of the journey into Broome, surrounded by white sandy beaches and clear blue waters.

For dinner, wander and take your pick from beachside restaurants and bars to Asian inspired cuisine perfectly matched to Broome’s balmy nights. You can’t go past the fresh, locally caught seafood or local steaks too.

2 nights l Oaks Resort Broome | (08 9192 9500)

Meal: Breakfast

Broome’s rich and colourful history began with the mass migration of Japanese, Filipino and Malay pearl divers seeking their fortune. This created a melting pot of cultures that make Broome the culturally diverse town that it is today.

This morning we visit Pearl Luggers to uncover the history of pearling, explore fascinating memorabilia and hear firsthand experiences from divers.

We’ll also see the highlights of Broome including Gantheaume Point, the Japanese Cemetery and Chinatown. Have your camera ready as late afternoon we drive to famous Cable Beach to watch one of the most magical sunsets you are ever likely to experience before dinner.

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

What an unbelievable adventure across the Kimberley we have had.

We have experienced some of the most eye-opening places the NT and WA outback has to offer. Every moment is a memory to savour.

After breakfast we have a taxi voucher ready for our “self-transfer” to Broome Airport for the flight home, marking the last moments of this adventure.

Bon voyage! We hope to see you on another Wanderlust Australia Tour soon!
